Assessing the Impact of an Opioid Prescribing Guideline for Dentists in Ontario, Canada

Dentists are often the source of initial exposure to prescription opioids in Ontario. On November 19, 2015, the Royal College of Dental Surgeons of Ontario (RCDSO) introduced an opioid prescribing guideline for the dental profession. The RCDSO guideline recommends using opioids as a third-line treatment for acute dental pain and suggests limits on prescription duration and quantity.

The purpose of this study is to examine whether the introduction of these guidelines influenced opioid prescribing patterns among dentists in Ontario.
